2019 Passage to Eastern Europe

Trip Planning Details (Dates, Costs, Accommodations)

We are pleased to propose the following to MYC members: a trip on the Danube with Viking River Cruises from Bucharest to Budapest. The base trip will begin by flying overnight from the USA on Sunday October 6, arriving Bucharest Monday October 7 and returning to the USA on October 17. Viking also offers interesting Pre- & Post-Cruise Extensions which would, of course, effect your departure and/or return dates. (See note.)

The base Viking itinerary begins with your transfer from the airport to a Bucharest hotel followed by a city tour the next morning, Tuesday October 8, before embarking to begin the cruise that afternoon. The cruise lasts for 8 days stopping at many interesting ports, seeing many interesting sites, before you arrive in Budapest and disembark on Tuesday October 15, transferring to a hotel there for 2 nights, where breakfasts are included; lunch and dinner are on your own. Wednesday, October 16 (day 10 of the Viking Itinerary) is a free day to spend as you wish in Budapest. The next and final day, Thursday October 17, is the day the base itinerary has you returning to the USA.

While Viking includes a tour in every port, it also offers many interesting optional tours along the way. For detailed day-by-day itinerary of included and optional tours as well as the Pre- & Post-Cruise Extensions, please see the Viking website here: Viking Site
or see details on our MYC website: Trip Details

If you elect the 3-Night Pre-Cruise Extension in Bucharest, you would depart the USA on Thursday October 3.

If you elect the 2-Night Post-Cruise Extension in Budapest, you would return to the USA on Saturday October 19.

If you elect the 3-Night Post-Cruise Extension in Prague, you would return to the USA on Sunday October 20.

You will be on a Viking Longship, the newest in their fleet with excellent amenities. The name of this particular ship is the “Viking Sigyr” should you want to look it up on the Internet.

The following costs for cabins per person are as follows:

Category F $3574.00 standard cabin, water level, smaller windows (150Sq Ft)
Category E $3674.00 “ “ “
Category D $3874.00 French Balcony (135 sq ft)
Category C $4074.00 “ “
Category B $4274.00 Full Veranda (205 sq ft)
Category A $4474.00 “ “
Category AA $6074.00 Veranda Suite (275 sq ft)

These costs include the following:

All port charges
Shore excursions provided each day
Wine/Beer at lunch and dinner
Unlimited free Wi-Fi
Visits to UNESCO Sites
Lectures and Destination Performances
24-hour specialty coffees, teas and bottled water
Ground transfers with Viking Air Purchase

You can reserve air travel with Viking . While the current cost is $899 per person, Viking cautions that the cost could go up from month to month. This rate includes offering- specific air with our group so everyone can go together and return together. The following are total per person costs for other air classes:
Premium Economy $1748.
Business Class $3890.
AA category Business class $2999. (If you are in Cabin Suites AA or higher)

Depending on which airline Viking uses, seat assignment times vary. We will know more later this year. If you take their air, you are assured transfers from the airport to the hotel and back from the ship, otherwise (on your own) you will pay approximately $120 each time of transfer.

If there is sufficient interest, I will procure a bus from Chatham to Logan Airport, and back and will prorate the net cost per person.

Cancellation fees are $100 per person prior to final payment 121 days before departure. The basic insurance I provide will cover $50 of that and at final payment Northside Travel will insure the whole trip.

Because it’s high season in October, the 3-night Pre-Cruise Extension in Bucharest will be $799 per person. Though currently sold out, please don’t hesitate to make your interest known to me as our group status may give us some clout.

Gratuities, which I have been told are approximately EUR 17/day per person, are not included. However, you may give your gratuities along the way if you prefer, or have them collected at the end of the trip. There is also a “drinks” package you may sign up for, which is $150 per person. If there are two of you in one cabin both parties must sign up if you want this option. The package is 24/7 of alcohol, as much as you want. You may also buy wine and liquor while on shore and there is no corkage fee.

I have provided a sign-up form for those joining us, to complete and return by regular mail. Please specify what category cabin you want, if you want a Pre- or Post-Cruise Package, as well your air requests. Some of you may want make your own air arrangements using points, etc. and that’s fine, but remember that you will be charged transfer fees through Viking or you will be responsible for getting to/from the hotel or ship on your own.

Your first deposit (a.s.a.p.) will be $750 per person. This will secure you a cabin number, your extra air selection and basic insurance. You may pay by credit card. If you so choose, please provide, on the sign-up form, your credit card number, expiration date and security code as well as full name on the account. Remember, your initial deposit is required to reserve your cabin; sooner is better than later!

I have ordered brochures and will see that they get to the Club House. Any questions, you may call me at 508-237-9662 or email me at sidney@northsidetravel.com, or you can get in touch with Rose and Dick Pears at rpears@att.net or 941-504-9494 (cell).

Looking forward to another great MYC trip. Dracula just might show up while we’re there!!

Best regards,

Sidney L Harvey
